Indian Erotic Art

Perhaps the most famous book about sex ever written is the Kama Sutra. The original Kama Sutra released in the second century didn't include any erotic imagery but no doubt it inspired the many erotic works that were made for centuries after its original release, from the erotic paintings that we associate with modern copies to the mind blowing sculptures that adorn various temples across India.

Indeed, sexual imagery was common place in India right up to the 18th century when European traders began to arrive bringing with them their moral values and of course Christianity which saw India's liberal views towards sexuality as barbaric and evidence of how primitive their culture was. The effects of European education, administration, scholarship of Indian history and biased literature all led to the effective 'colonization' of the Indian mind with European values. This led some Indians wanting to conform their religious practices and moral values to Victorian ideas of "high" civilization.
